Gooseneck shovel handles can be recognized by the thickened lower section of the handle. The thickened lower section makes the handle extra strong and ensures it fits securely in the hand. ATLAS gooseneck shovel handles are made from ash tree roots, which contain the best wood. Ash wood is tough, shock-absorbing, and strong. The ash wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process, sawn ash wood boards are air-dried. During the second process, the ash wood is computer-controlled kiln-dried in a climate chamber. By drying back, the handle does not shrink, the tool stays firmly mounted to the handle, and the through-mount T-grip can be pressed onto the handle without glue or a staple.

The ATLAS handle is then waxed with plant-based carnauba. This allows the wood to breathe, prevents it from absorbing water or dirt, and preserves its beautiful natural color. Waxing provides a longer service life and a pleasantly smooth handle, helping prevent blisters. In addition, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
