Spade handle ATLAS HICKORY 85 cm milled end, with T-grip, for S&J spade

ATLAS spade handle made of hickory wood, 85 cm in length, fitted with a T-grip and a recessed, smooth, narrow point. This handle is suitable for ATLAS gooseneck spades (item numbers 811052, 811053, 811062) and Spear & Jackson spades. This handle is 5 cm longer than the original Spear & Jackson spade handle. For assembly, a 40 mm rivet is recommended (item number 651590, including assembly advice).

Hickory is a heavy and hard American wood species that is even stronger than ash wood. Hickory wood is particularly tough, shock-resistant and resilient. The wood undergoes two drying processes: during the first drying process, the sawn boards are air-dried. During the second process, the hickory wood is computer-controlled re-dried in a climate chamber. Because of the re-drying, the handle does not shrink and tools stay firmly attached to the handle.

The ATLAS handle is then waxed with plant-based Carnauba. This ensures that the wood can breathe, does not absorb water or dirt, and retains its beautiful natural color. Waxing results in a longer service life and a pleasantly smooth handle, helping prevent blisters. In addition, plant-based waxing of handles is better for the environment than using varnish or paraffin.
