Forests are still disappearing. Due to irresponsible logging, for example, so that a forest can no longer recover, and due to the burning of forests to turn them into agricultural land. Worldwide, millions of hectares of forest are permanently lost every year. The Amazon region is under considerable pressure. More than 15% of the Brazilian portion has been lost. If deforestation continues at the current pace, by 2020 a quarter of the total forest area in the Brazilian Amazon region will have disappeared. Forests purify the air and have a moderating effect on the climate. Forests store large amounts of CO2. Deforestation releases CO2, thereby intensifying the greenhouse effect. It is essential that global deforestation be brought to a halt quickly.
