Sediment dredge DE WIT with ring, without handle
A sediment dredge is used to clean ditches, canals and ponds
Sediment dredge DE WIT, supplied with a ring for attachment to a handle. A hemp or nylon dredge net can be fitted to the sediment dredge.
A sediment dredge or pull dredge is suitable for pulling silt, sludge, excess aquatic plants and other deposits onto the bank from ditches, canals and ponds. By drawing the dredge across the bottom in a pulling or dragging motion, material is lifted up.
For a suitable handle for a DE WIT sediment dredge you can choose a long pole or a ditch hook handle. These are available in various lengths. The supplied ring is used to attach the dredge to the handle.
A hemp or nylon net is mounted to the sediment dredge. A hemp dredge net clings to silt and sludge better and is therefore the most suitable. The nylon net is often used to remove coarser debris and objects from the water.
In the past, a sediment dredge was used in wet peat harvesting to scoop peaty silt from the bottom of a body of water. The peat was hauled ashore or deposited in a flat-bottomed boat. The dredged peat was then placed on a drying bed so it could be made into turf. With the sediment dredge it was possible to dredge peat from well below the waterline, a practice known as veentrekken or slagturven.
