The handle of a spade often has to endure heavy use. Ash wood and hickory handles withstand heavy loads and naturally have some resilience. A plastic or wooden handle with a fiberglass core is even stronger and provides extra reinforcement. There are also narrow spades available with fiber handles; for this, see the drainage spades.
